Film, Theatre & the Arts
While there have been depictions of LGBTQIA+ people in film and media since its inception more than 100 years ago, varying degrees of prejudice against the LGBTQIA+ community have caused onscreen/stage depctions to be heavily censored. In Hollywood, the strict Hays Code refused depictions of homosexuality in film for over thirty years which saw LGBTQIA+ individuals portrayed as villians or in tragedies. History was made in 2017 when Moonlight made history as the first LGBTQIA+ movie to win an Oscar for Best Picture - a pivotal historical moment marking changing mindsets and acceptance towards the LGBTQIA+ community.
